Momentary Lapse of Work

16 November, 2006 (15:48) | LauraJoy, Life In General, Work | By: Brian

This week it’s the double whammy. On Sunday Laura decided it was time for us to take a break while her and I sorted through various personal issues. It’s been tough, but I’ve got great friends to help and hobbies to keep me busy. Then yesterday I was laid off from QLI. QLI was my first “real job.” I had worn so many hats there that it was really hard to describe what I did in one sentance. I was a jack of all computer related trades and master of none. I don’t know whether that will hurt or help my job search, but who knows. I’ve got a very good friend and professional recruiter helping me with my resume, which can currently be found here. Right now it’s the standard Word template, which I hope to move away from and to something spiffier soon. After I have two or three nice looking resumes I’ll be applying at various Java development companies and IT departments. I could easily be a full time Java developer working on applications or back-end services. I could do IT coding or maintanence, or Linux type system adminstration. I could do web development as well and improve on my html/css/php language skills. What I’d really like to do is to be a developer on interesting research projects in advanced computer science. Unfortunately QLI was one of very few companies in the area that do that sort of thing. I have a bit of a cushion in savings right now and I’ll be collecting the maximum unemployment benefits. I should be able to squeak by the next couple of months without a problem and get back on my feet. In the meantime, feel free to visit and bring a canned good by!
